I'm trying to trace the origin of a word in Visayan, a language of the southern Philippines. The word in question is paypay ('fan') pronounced like the English word 'pie'.
Historically it was Hokkien speakers who traded most in the Philippines and the trade history goes back many centuries, and it's plausible that fans were an article of trade.
Can anyone tell me the Hokkien word for 'fan'. Or if there are other Chinese languages that paypay could be derived from? Many thanks!
