Has anyone ever seen the show? Seems like it's a sitcom in Hokkien aired by Astro欢喜台 (Astro Hua Hee Dai) from Malaysia. Any impressions about it? Is it in Penang Hokkien?

It is quite entertaining and uses the Hokkien commonly spoken in the Klang Valley.

Nice. Too bad there's no way to subscribe to Hua Hee Dai and watch it online. It'd be nice to have a 24/7 Hokkien channel to watch, especially 'cos it's not only Taiwanese, but also many local programs

A.k.a. Pasang Hokkien, right? "Pasang" 吧生 is the Sino name for Klang, but might also be an old Malay name for Klang?

I'm under the impression that Pasang Hokkien hasn't "leveled out" -- people speak differently depending on what dialect their grandparents and great-grandparents speak/spoke. This might be b/c Hoklo is not used much in public life there, esp. up-valley, in/around KL... Astro is the biggest step toward changing that -- much respect. AFAIK, Hokkiens are actually the second biggest group in the Klang Valley after the Malays.

Are U from the Pasang/KL area, yeobh2? I wanna know more about this dialect of Hokkien, but there's almost no info "out there" on it.

The girl speaks with an accent I identify w/ Pasang-KL... Her running T3 is like Manila Hokkien... But overall her Hokkien seems to fluctuate from type to type. The guy's accent seems more consistent. I can't tell if it's Pasang-KL or southern. A Penang Hokkien spkr told me "central and southern M'sian Hokkien sound the same", but that seems questionable to me.

Another nice thing about Hua Hee Dai is that they produced songs which later came out in CD and karaoke DVD/VCD. Some of these songs are original songs and others Taiwanese songs.

It's nice to hear Hokkien songs with a slightly different flavour. Most Taiwanese songs are Japanese Enka style (not that I dislike them, but indeed not the kind of music I'd choose to listen to the whole day

), even TW Hokkien songs sang by young singers (that's weird, considering Enka isn't popular at all amongst JP youngsters) sound VERY Enka. Fortunately, these songs by Hua Hee Dai sound a little bit different. Since the DVDs are kinda cheap (cost less than 8 bucks), I'm looking forward buying some of them soon if shipping isn't too expensive

And last night I happened to stumble into Ah Niu (阿牛) Hokkien songs. Really nice. He's Malaysian Chinese, but no idea of what Hokkien he sings in... Looks pretty close to TW Hokkien, so probably not Penang

My KL relatives speak the Engchhun dialect. So it's not like Singapore Hokkien, which is more like Amoy/Taiwan.

Interesting! Please tell us more about how they talk, when U have time. In particular, any differences in vocab and grammar between KL-Engchun and Penang?

Huge - I don't come across my KL relatives that often, but when they used to come up I would remark on their "hy", "ty", "khy", etc., that they used "thai" as a superlative instead of siunn, lots of 0-tone words at the end like -khi-lai where in Penang they would be full tone, etc. My grand-aunts and grand-uncles are 2nd gen immigrants, though, so I don't know how reflective they are of KL Hokkien.

Interesting. I hadn't realized that PgHK doesn't do the 0-tones. Always good to learn more about C. M'sian Hokkien.
