What did you think of the city? How long did you stay? What did you do? I've also been there, but for only a three short day stay. I'm thinking about going there again to teach english. Have any tips/leads?

感謝

city wise is a little backward. imo teochew and suahtau now dont enjoy good reputation in china cos earlier on there's been a number of frauds and cheating cases plus huge quantities of fake/counterfeit products uncovered recently.

food is pretty nice, not so expensive in day to day life, female youngsters are still quite discriminated and they dun get a chance to study or do anything very much.

Really, backward? Hmmm. Perhaps that means its relatively non-metropolitanized. That may mean there are more charming and cultured aspects left. =) Cross-fingers.

Too bad about the female youngsters. Why them and not the male ones?

When I visited it seemed very hot and almost nasty. It was like Southeast Asia. In a romanticized and after-the-fact kind of way, I liked it. I think I could learn to like it however.

LED, it doesn't matter where you go probably, as long as you like it, again, in metropolitan, corrupt, fast-paced, shabbily built, blade runner like, dynamic Taipei, I found other worlds of people, prostitutes, the wealthy, spirit mediums, artists, the poor, stars, the marginalized, the world is yours-kinda cliche but true

It's not as developed as one might expect it to be - e.g. being a coastal city.

The Chaoshan cultural region is considered one of the most culturally conservative regions in China. As they say, "Marry a Chaoshan woman if you can, but never a Chaoshan man." This is because Chaoshan culture has a strong component of machismo and male chauvinism. (So if you marry a Chaoshan girl, then she will be family-oriented. If you marry a Chaoshan guy, then he will expect to be the head of the household.) Some liberals from outside might not like it, but I identify with cultural conservatism anyway. I love it there.

The other thing to add is that Teochiu people have a reputation for being more rough and ready. This is our reputation, I gathered, throughout Guangdong. But we're totally dominating Guangzhou right now, haha.

Right, and Samcan / Chimcun (深圳) even more. U hear Hoklo tunes in public all the time. I think most of the time it's Teochews and Haklaus (from around Soàⁿboé) playing them.
