Intro

Post by Yuxian09 »

Hi all,

Just want to intro myself to the people here. I'm Yuxian/ Shawn originally from Medan, Indonesia. I am so surprised to find a forum on Hokkien. Lots of interesting discussions here. I moved to Aus when I was very young so I am only able to understand Hokkien but find it extremely difficult to speak it. Currently learning Mandarin. Also Dad cannot speak any Chinese so I was brought up on bahasa and english at home.

Over the years I have been tying to get more in touch with my Chinese background and one of the things I've been doing is researching where my family comes from originally in China and about the Hokkien language. I have some questions if anyone can help me.

1) Is Medan Hokkien the same as Penang Hokkien?

2) Has anyone heard of a village/town/city called 陇溪 or 隆溪?Sorry I cant remember which 'long' it was. I haven't been able to find it on any maps.

3)How do you say my name in hokkien? 林榆贤.

thanks for any help!
Yuxian

Your name 林榆贤 (林榆賢) would be pronounced lim5 ju5 hian5 in the 漳州 (zhang1 zhou1) variety of Hokkien. 漳州 is pronounced "chiong chiu" in Hokkien.

Dear Hong,

I got the reading from the National Taiwan University site where they had "chiong chiu" as being the reading for "漳州" in the colloquial speech of 漳州.

Hi Yuxian,

Longxi is currently known as 漳州市. You should be able to find this on the map. Medan Hokkien, like Penang Hokkien shares many similarities in terms of pronunciation with the minnan vernacular in Zhangzhou. However, the tonal changes should be different from that of zhangzhou.

Dear Kobo,
According to china's scholar ,漳 should be in 文讀 for some reasons I can't remember.
李如龍 in his book put medan as chiangchiu speaking area.
朱熹 和 林語堂 was born in longxi if i am not wrong.

Pronunciation of names of places in the Minnan area seems to follow more on tradition than on the words literally. These are some of the examples that I can think of:

漳州:Ciang1-ciu1 (not Ciong1-ciu1)
漳浦:Ciu*1-pho`2 (not Ciong1-pho`2 or Ciang1-pho`2)
云霄:Un5-sio1 (not hun5-siau1 or hun5-sio1)
同安、南安、惠安、安海:Tang5-Ua*1, Lam5-Ua*1, Hui7-ua*1, Ua1-hai2 (安 is pronounced as "ua*" not "an")
安溪:An1-khue1 (安 is pronounced as "an" not "ua*")
德化: Tek4-hue3 (not Tek4-hua3)
旧镇:Ko`1-tin3 (not Gu7-tin3)
