etymology of Hoklo

Post by Henning »

Hello,

does anybody know the etymology of the word Hoklo (also spelled "Holo")? I have found different Chinese characters, and I am actually not sure which ones reflect the correct origin of the term.

Best,

Hok is the the Min speaker's pronunciation of Fujian's "fu", or in Cantonese and Hakka, "fuk". Lo means "man", "guy", and so a Hoklo is a Fujianese person, or having roots and speaking a Fujianese dialect.

i think its a transformation from 'he'luo'(河洛), meaning he'nan and luo'yang of the 'central plains'.
