Bagan Hokkien 峇眼亞比个福建(同安)話

Post by niuc »

Hi all

Long time not visiting this forum! Glad to see that it is still "alive" although the activities are not that robust nowadays. Meanwhile, I am experimenting with recording videos about Bagan (Bagansiapiapi) Hokkien. Here is my first video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SDzh6s5tiU

Apparently there are some tone sandhis (running tones) that are "unusual" in the video, but that's the way I usually read it. I will explain more, hopefully word by word, in subsequent videos (when I am free to record more). Thanks for watching!

Yes, I've seen it, and it's very cool. I particularly like the nice script you developed for it. I hope some time you could start to write a dictionary of Bagan Hokkien with example sentences (although perhaps in POJ rather than the script you invented, unless you can make a font for it and I can learn). Even if it reflects your own particular individual take on Hokkien, it will still be a valuable tool for learners, so I really would encourage you to make it a long-term project.

As for the lack of activity here, I believe the forum has suffered the unfortunate fate of much traffic being diverted to facebook, which has the advantage of quick contact, but the disadvantage of being a bit of a free-for-all, where much thought is put into answers that soon become lost in the babble of voices.

Ah-bin, thank you for your encouragement. I am really glad that you like the script. After recording the video, I realised that I spelled the first 願 "guān" as "kuān". I thought nobody noticed that, but apparently Loke Chin Wei noticed the discrepancy and gave me an opportunity to explain the mistake. Anyway, I has corrected my notebook (for subsequent videos, if any). Here is the link to the alphabet of the script (I didn't succeed in posting the image in this posting), in case you or anyone would like to know: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid ... 316&type=1

Regarding dictionary of Bagan Hokkien with example sentences, actually I did consider it since years ago but so far never realised. There are not many Bagan Hokkien speaker (maybe only several thousands) and due to historical, political and socio-economy context, Bagan Hokkien probably will disappear sooner than other Hokkien variants. Therefore, thank you so much for encouraging me to make it a long-term project! I do hope it will survive, but even if it won't, the dictionary can be a "historical record".

I agree with you that facebook has bad impact on this forum. If only we can have the best of both, quick contact and yet postings can be stored and easily searched as in this forum.
