How does one actually pronounce "Teochew"
How does one actually pronounce "Teochew"
I have seen Teochew, the most common way I have seen besides Mandarin 'Chaozhou,' and various other things such as I believe Djolnant, Cho Jiu, Chao Chow, etc. Most of the Teochew people I know in Thailand pronounce the word along the lines of "Dtaew Jiw." (Sorry, I have no idea about tones.) Do different Teochew people have different ways of pronouncing the word? Or does anyone know the standard way of saying in Teochew in mainland China? Thanks.

Generally speaking it is pronounced "Dee-o Jiu". Some people may pronounce it "Dee-a Jiu". Because there are a billion ways of romanizing and because a lack of agreement on standards, the written form of this word has been butchered to death. =) I prefer Teochiu or Teochew, though a more accurate way of writing it would be "Dio Jiu".

Hi,
I am keen to learn Teochiu, just some basic daily dialogue. But there is no where I can find audio material for it. What can I do?
Yours,
Annie

Hi,
Sorry for this late reply. Actually I have checked your website several times and you did a super job constructing it. However, my major problem is that I don't know the pronouncation. I wish there's some audio material online but till now find none.
It is a very interesting story why I want to learn it. In short, someone challenged me that I would never be able to speak Teochiu, and if I was able to, he would end up marrying me. (sorry, it really sounds ridiculous and so embarassing to put it in online) For me, the more important part is not this joke. I know Teochiu is extremely difficult and so different from Mandarin, I just want to prove that when there is a will there is a way. But till now it seems the way is still blocked.
In addition to this, I am also very curious about Teochiu culture. It is amazing how this group of people keep their tradition and values so intact no matter where they are.
Till now, I still like Teochiu people very much.
Are these good reasons for me to have the incentives?
Just hope I know someone who can teach me some daily expressions.
