It is very strange that above web site from china said that duit is chinese hokkien wrong saying of duit (www.qz.fj.cn...)See http://chinese.pku.edu.cn/bbs-minnan part page 29 to confirm that luy is from chiang chew. They also made mistake about sabun from Portugese in fact but not from malay.

This site also has a book www.yalon.com.tw/taiwantalk/index/index.asp.
It is very hard to find out is hokkien really change malay word duit to luy because they would have changed tahan to lahan if someone said hokkien cannot pronouce d ,t.In Malay duit means a holland and portugal period of money made of timber ,etc.Maybe it is a holland or portugese name for luiy.Khmer also listed them -luy as money.

Lui for duit is not improbable - I have a Hokkien friend who pronounces doctor "lokte". Luit would be more likely, but I see no difficulty with lui.

Any guesses on the word puat8, meaning 10 cents? Related to baht?
