Teochiu, Parallel to Hokkien

Post by limengdi »

From time to time I visit this language forum for interesting tidbits about Hokkien and Minnan languages. It's always occurred to me how parallel the situation with Teochiu is, with it's sister language Hokkien. In particular, I enjoy hearing about the situations of Hokkien language survival in various countries in the world (esp. Southeast Asia). As I'm sure you all know, Teochiu have settled extensively in SEA as well, though often in areas where there are few Hokkiens. Teochiu people have settled mostly in Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and to a lesser extent in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. To my knowledge, the Teochiu spoken in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia are very influenced by Hokkien + Bahasa. For Malaysian Teochius in particular, I have trouble understanding (I'm Teochiu of course =). My family is from Cambodia, and our Teochiu has been influenced by and influenced Khmer (the Cambodian language).

Some Basic Teochiu words for reference:

汝 leu2 ("eu" represents the schwa sound. Most words that are Hokkien "-i, -u, etc. will be Teochiu "eu" or "y" depending on what romanization standar you want to use) Interestingly there are regional forms of Teochiu that use "li2". )

無 bho 5 (our tone five is a high flat tone, whereas the Hokkien version is usually rising I thik)

Some Cambodian Teochiu words we use with questionable origins:
(Teochiu tones (8) are sorta similar to Hokkien, but they have differences..)

[ ][ ] ma1 ta6 = police, police officer
田内 chang7 lai6 = farms, rural area
東司 dang1 si1 = bathroom

Other patterns of difference from Hokkien and Teochiu that I notice:

中 Teochiu: Dong, Hokkien: Diong
想 Teochiu: Sio~, Hokkien: Siu~?
唱 Teochiu: Chio, Hokkien: Chiu?

More later...

Hi LaoDI

Are you from Bukit Mertajam, Province Wellesly? I lived in that place during my childhood years. I am asking because I saw in your article that said "BM boys".

I am now teaching in China.
