Help with names: bright beam

Hi,
I was born in Indonesia, and I have been trying to figure out the characters of my name.

My name in latinized Indonesian is Huy Hong, sur name Tan (Chen)

From what I remember the names mean "bright beam," and from the character dictionary I found:

Mandarin Hanyu pinyin: hui4 heng2
Minnan: hui7 heng5

Can someone tell me if this makes sense?
Also the "heng" does not sound like "hong" because perhaps we are using Quanzhou dialect in Indonesia?

Hi Andrew

I think your name should be 輝煌 (in big5 encoding). It's hui1huang2 in Mandarin Pinyin and hui1-hong5 (sandhi form: hui7_hong5) in Hokkien.

Which part of Indonesia are you from? My Hokkien is from Bagansiapiapi, Riau.

How about beam? Is Chinese equivalent for beam is huang2/hong ?

I discuss this with my Chinese/Taiwanese friends, and they think:

1st name is "bright," Mandarin hui1 (and there are 2 of them, but I couldn't explain which one),
and Minnan hui1;

2nd name is Mandarin heng2, there is no Minnan pronounciation, but this name means "beam" of a house, not of light -- the wooden one. If you put the word "purlins" in the character dictionary (English) you will find it.

This make sense since my younger brother is Hoey (Hui) Liong, and the Liong part is Mandarin liang2, Minnan liong5. It means another type of wooden beam

You are welcome. In dictionary I found two characters pronounced hui1 in Mandarin with meaning "bright" i.e. 輝 and 暉 (both of them more or less similar, the latter more for brightness of sun light).

If your "beam" is not light beam but wooden beam (purlin), in dictionary it's 桁 (heng2 or hang2 in Mandarin). Its Hokkien pronunciation is hong5, heng5/hing5 or even huai*5 in http://home.kimo.com.tw/profliim/HARNJI-YM/zh4O.htm#6 (->please note that this site employs different romanization). In http://iug.csie.dahan.edu.tw/iug/Ungian ... l/chha.asp it's listed as kong5.
