NAME: JOSÉ RIZAL
DOB: June 19, 1861, Calamba, Laguna, Philippines
DOD: December 30, 1896 at Rizal Park, Manila, Philippines
CHINESE/PINYIN NAME: -
POJ (Pe̍h-ōe-jī ) NAME: -
ANCESTRY: Minnan Hokkien. Ancestry from Jinjiang晋江 (Chìn-kang), Quanzhou泉州 (Chôan-chiu) in Fujian Province.
COUNTRY: Philippines
CATEGORY: Politician. A hero-martyr of the Philippine Revolution and National Hero of The Philippines
DESCRIPTIONS & ACHIEVEMENTS:

José Rizal, hero-martyr of the Philippine Revolution and National Hero of The Philippines. The Philippines’s national hero Jose Rizal, is the direct descendant of Chinese trader Cua Yi Lam, who immigrated from Siongque to the Philippines in the later part of the 17th century. Church records. Jose Rizal whose grandfather is a descendant of Jinjiang晋江 (Chìn-kang), Quanzhou泉州 (Chôan-chiu) in Fujian Province.

The Philippines’s national hero Jose Rizal’s exact replica of the monument of the Philippines national hero Jose Rizal at the Luneta Park can be found in the heart of this southern Chinese city, standing proudly in mute testimony to the morals and values Rizal had hoped to impart to his fellow Filipinos. It also stands as a remembrance to his great, great grandfather, Domingo Lamco of Zhang-Guo province, who was once a resident and citizen of China.

On the second day of her official visit to China, President Macapagal-Arroyo led wreath-laying rites at the Rizal Shrine here to pay respect to Rizal, his grandfather Lamco and the Chinese people. The President was accompanied by some members of her Cabinet, including Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap, Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye, and Environment Secretary Angelo Reyes, along with some members of Congress and local officials.

On Jan. 23, 2003, House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. led a 60-member Philippine delegation in wreath-laying ceremonies during the inauguration of the Rizal Shrine in Siongque Village, Jinjiang City in Fujian Province. The national hero is the direct descendant of Chinese trader Cua Yi Lam, who immigrated from Siongque (Zhang-Guo in Mandarin) to the Philippines in the later part of the 17th century. Church records show that Cua Yi Lam was baptized Domingo Lamco in Manila in 1697 at the age of 35 and listed his birthplace as Siongque village in China.

The José Rizal monument, in Jinjiang 晋江 (Chìn-kang) City, Quanzhou泉州 (Chôan-chiu) in Fujian Province, is made of the world-famous Jinjiang granite stones, stands at 18.61 meters high, which is taller than the 12-meter high Rizal Monument in Manila, and secondly the expression/look of Rizal`s eyes was described as one of a Chinese soldier. José Rizal is highly revered even in Jinjiang 晋江 (Chìn-kang) till today as one of the Jinjiang most prominent son.

The José Rizal monument was built on a five-hectare park named in Rizalâ’s honor, making it the biggest Rizal Shrine outside the Philippines. The park will also be the site of a Rizal museum and library. The success of the project can be attributed to the combined efforts of the Cua-Chua Family Association where Rizal drew his Chinese lineage, the KAISA Para sa Kaunlaran, headed by Prof. Teresita Ang-See, which provided assistance in research and substance, Philippine Airlines chair Lucio Tan who headed the project committee working group, the Tulay Foundation, the Knights of Rizal, the Philippine Consulate General in Xiamen, the Jinjiang village and the city association based in Manila that arranged funding for the project, the Fujian Provincial Overseas Chinese Affairs Office and the Quanzhou Municipal Government.

Pier,

It's not
MINNAN (BÂN-LÂM 闽南)
but rather
BÂN-LÂM 闽南 (MINNAN)

BÂN-LÂM 闽南 is a new name for the concept in the language itself. The longstanding English name is "Hokkien". Another longstanding name is Hoklo, or Holo. What the hell is a "Minnan"?

Hi, amhoanna,
Thank you for your comments.
Two issues here.
What is Hokkien? What is Minnan?

What is Hokkien?

Hokkien means Fujian in Mandarin, right?
It China, Hokkien means peoples who come from the Province of Fujian (or Hokkien).
In Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei etc, "The Hokkien Hoay Kuan (The Hokkien Association)", the member incorporates all the descent or peoples originated from Fujian (Hokkien) Province. It means peoples like Hoklo/Hō-ló/Hokkien, Hockchew(Mingdong), Putian, Hinghua, Minxi, Minbei, Hakka(sometimes included). That is the definition of Hokkien descent in common parlance. Because the Hokkien/Minnan are the majority spoken language and populations, sometimes Hokkien (also commonly known as Hoklo) represent Fujian. But Teochew-nang and Hailam-nang (Hainanese) are not included as Hokkien-lang.

In fact in Taiwan, they had discontinue using the term “Hokkien". Instead they use only the term Hoklo/Hō-ló, Minnan/Banlam or Taiwanese/Taigi for the Hokkien language/descent.

What is Minnan(BanLam)?

Some language expert in China, through research had found out that Minnan (Banlam) is the branch consisting of many dialects. Minnan is a new term coined in China to represent all the people speaking the similar/same language root similar to the language spoken in Taiwan and Quanzhou–Zhangzhou-Xiamen (Chinchew+Changchew+Amoy); which include Teochew, Hainanese, Leizhou/Qiongwen plus few others, due to migration from "the Minnan Triangle ((Chinchew+Changchew+Amoy)” due to poverty and overpopulations in the past. For better understanding of the term “Minnan/Banlam", I suggest you read the reference source (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minnan) or/and read "the Minnan Relationship Chart" thread again in this forum. :)

However, I will continue to use the term Hokkien and Minnan (Banlam) alternatively to represent the people and language from the "the Minnan Triangle ((Chinchew+Changchew+Amoy)” due to familiarity, even though the term may be misrepresented/misunderstood by some readers esp from China and overseas.

"Hokkien" are the common term probably use only in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and Brunei to represent Holo/Hoklo peoples from "the Minnan Triangle region".
Sorry can't we just go and look at Wikipedia if we want to find all this stuff out?

Also, if you looked into things more, instead of just copying and pasting willy-nilly from Wikipedia, ..........
Thank you Ah-bin.
I appreciate your comments on this matter.
There are articles on the “Prominent Chinese People” under the respective topic on Cantonese Peoples, Hakka Peoples, etc in the Wikipedia. I had tried to research but so far there is none specifically emphasise on the Prominent Minnan/Bân-lâm(Hoklo/Hokkien) peoples yet in Wikipedia or other websites. If you know any websites on this topic, I would appreciate you share with me and other readers in this forum. I m trying my best to compile a comprehensive list to share with other Minnan readers here.

I need some names (with reference sources) of prominent Minnan/Hokkien peoples from Burma(Myanmar), Thailand, Vietnam, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, USA, Canada, Britain, Australia and New Zealand etc. If anyone from this country, kindly PM me or contribute the informations on this thread.

Thank you in advance. :P :)

NAME: HONG CHENGCHOU or Hung Cheng-chou
DOB: 1593 in Nan'an (Lâm-oaⁿ), Fujian, China
DOD: 1665 in Nan'an, Fujian, China
CHINESE/PINYIN NAME: 洪承疇; Hóng Chéngchóu
POJ (PE̍H-ŌE-JĪ ) NAME: Hông Sêng-tiû
ANCESTRY: From Nan'an (Lâm-oaⁿ), Fujian
COUNTRY: Fujian, China
CATEGORY: Military Commander from Fujian at the end of the Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty

DESCRIPTIONS & ACHIEVEMENTS:

• Prime Minister, 1636; Field Marshal 1640
• Hong Chengchou is the leading thinker on military strategy during Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty.
• The earliest proponent of the adoption of European cannon by the Ming army

Hong Chengchou (1593-1665) was from Nan'an of Fujian Province. He became a successful candidate of the highest imperial examination during the Wanli Period, and was appointed as Defense Minister later by Emperor Chongzhen. In 1641, the Ming and Qing regimes were involved in the large-scale Battle of Songshan when he was defeated and captured. In 1642, he surrendered to the Qing court and was then appointed as Defense Minister and other key positions.

Hong Chengchou was a native of Fujian who rose to the top military post by leading campaigns against the rebels in the 1620s. He was also a leading thinker on military strategy and a proponent (like Yuan Chonghuan, Xu Guangqi and Sun Yuanhua) of the adoption of European cannon by the Ming army.

After his surrender, Hong was made an official only after the Qing occupied Beijing. In 1645, Hong was sent to Nanjing with the title Pacificator of Jiangnan. His real role in the military was to ship supplies; nonetheless he suppressed many Ming officials and members of the Southern Ming imperial family. Hong was several times accused of having secret relations with the Ming. He was in 1651 chastised for sending his mother back to Fujian and in 1652 was not allowed to return to his native Fujian to mourn his mother death. Although appointed governor-general of 5 provinces of Huguang, Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan and Guizhou, his real task again was to provide for the army.
