My Baby Hokkien name?
Re: My Baby Hokkien name?
Hi, maxlim,
Firstly, congratulations on your new baby.
承銳 is Seng Lue. If the second character's spelling is too weird, I suppose Lui will do.
In reference to your other post on the same enquiry, generally there is no distinction between "Singapore version" of Hokkien and any others for given names, as they are given in 文讀 pronunciation, which is fairly standard across the different variants of Hokkien. It is in the surnames that you tend to get a variations, as those are in 白讀.
Hope this helps.

Re: My Baby Hokkien name?
Hi, maxlim,
I cannot comment on whether Seng or Sing would be more suitable, as it really depends on what variant of Hokkien you belong to. But given the lack of standardisation, I don't think it is too much of an issue either way. My personal preference is Seng, as -i- feels too Mandarin to me.
Either way, it is not Sin or Sen. There has to be a -g ending in 承.

暄 will be Huan or Hwan or Hoan.
Here, 卓 that means "outstanding" sounds like 逐 that means "everything" in Hokkien, different from Mandarin. In Mandarin, these 2 characters never sound so similar.
And, 暄 with a "sun" is also different from 瑄 or 碹 which are more common in names, they all mean jewelry that may have been a little materialistic, but 暄 means "warmth" and "bright". In other Hokkien names, most of the time you see 宣 comes as Suan but 暄 is pronounced Huan. In Mandarin, they all sound Xuan but in Hokkien, your baby's name sounds unique.
Do you think your baby's going to be warm-hearted, bright and outstanding in everything ?
PS: 逐項 = Tak Hang, everything......
