I meant to give a small response to this earlier, but forgot. Indeed, I agree fully with this statement. I too believe that this certainly happened - quite a number of times through all the centuries. That's one of the reasons that I believe that the *idea* of being able to rise up in society - as "theoretically" outlined in the Chinese conception - is in itself such an important thing (as I said earlier).

Wow, this analysis/interpretation would never have occurred to me, but I think it's a very good explanation! I guess I'm more "Chinese" than I realise (I have a tendency to think of myself as very "Western"...).
