Pretty is not sui but 女+畜=thek =chu in mandarin? (maybe Tongan/jinmen are not supposed to this word).Tongan/jinmen don't use 說 serh like chuanchiu.
It is in Kangxizidian from 集韻=媚也。
On the subject of "sui"... how do you write "ean4 tau5" (handsome)?

酥soo1 is also used for pretty too
穿 a3 thiak7 thiak6 (穿得很漂亮)
妝 a3 thiak7thiak6 (打扮得很漂亮)
Actually no benzi about 象聲詞 for languages of china, just up to them to find a zi for it.

It's true that we (Tang-ua*) use sui2, not thek; also kong2 講 is the common one, 說 ser4 is very rare e.g. in khin1-sia*1-sue3-ser4 輕聲細說 = to speak very softly.

I think beautiful/pretty is 嬌 kiau1. 巧 khiau2 means clever or even crafty, depends on the context.

No,if look at Prof.Chiu's dict you will find that he is correct.嬌kiau1 is for another meaning -不能吃苦=即個查某真嬌。(this can be used by mother-in- law)
another is for color -鮮艷=即塊布色傷嬌
But 愛嬌,妖嬌,嬌頭 are really for pretty woman
Yes,he did say 巧 can be used for 手藝 clever and pretty as well.

So much for handsome, beautiful, etc... how do you write "khiap" (ugly)?
