Hong, thanks for all those marvellous samples! :D

Mark, thanks for this interesting topic. Although literary and colloquial readings sometimes differ a lot, I think most of the time their relation is quite systematic .e.g. -an & -ua*, -ing & -i*, -ing & ia*, -iong & -ing, -iong & -iu*, etc. No doubt there are many words like ta1-po`1, ca1-bo`2, ba2, etc that might be of non-sinitic origin. Yet I think even if - let's say - Hokkien/Minnan originally were not sinitic, it still would have been a sino-tibetan language (compared to Japanese, which is not). This is just my personal opinion, any corrections would be gladly welcomed. Thanks. :)

Hi, Niuc,

Thanks for your comments. You are right - the class of words I am referring to are the ones such as those quoted above (ta1-po1, ca1-bo2, etc.). This thread was spawned from my interest in those words in Minnan (and the other Southern dialects, in general) where the 本字 cannot be traced back to any recorded stage in Old Chinese - especially when characters already existed for them (in this case, 男 and 女).

Cheers,
Mark
