Hong: I think many Penangites do know the proper words, but only use it in formal situations or when speaking to someone from overseas, e.g. mi*-pau instead of lo-ti, chioh-thau instead of ba-tu.

Has anyone ever noticed sometimes southerners ask what the Penang word for spoon is? Apparently they are told we use some funny word. When I tell them we use 'thau-kiong' they look disappointed.

I wonder why we don't converse at all in Hokkien on this board. Not that I'd get very far, but I'd probably understand what was written by people more fluent.

Dear Yisheng,
They asked for the written form of cibai just to confirm that minnan is a language with hanzi but not unchinese-like language.The bai=bi1 in Xiadaihanyucidian.The word is from guhanyu.
I am not completely sure that Prof.Chew didn't has some complaints in Hami,etc. We must be careful people will not be honest when they are in Malaysia-everything is GOOD but they might be just polite for some reasons.Look at those singers .etc.
Prof.Chiu contrubution to min languages are not better than Huangdiancheng,Lirulong or those in Taiwan =Wushouli,Dingpangxin,etc.
His books are co-written and not many articles from him.
You must have two books from Prof.MAZHONGQI for chiangchiu and at least 30 articles from him about chiangchiu.

As I already said.No money means no improvement for us.Anyway it is crazy for common lay people to send renminbi to china and US dollar to taiwan for purchasing these books.
Are you saying your grandfather came from Haicheng or just those people from KUGONGSI in Penang?

Here, our word for police is "pia*" and for spoon is "theng3 si2."

Niuc: About our pa-zi (potato), my mother told me that "pa" means foreign/imported and "zi" yam.

I see Penang and whole North malaysian minnan miss i vowel in chiangchiu.
Thewords mostly have the same form in teow chiu like kiang=keong in quanzhou.
I think there are many words like these.50?
Asfor south malaysia they didn't use se=say for kong which is only use by quanzhou peoplein china.Ho=To for give ,all thoseancient form of quanzhou were missing from them.

Hong: I think the main difference between the underlying Hokkien in Chiangchiu and Penang is probably 1. the yangru (8) tone, and 2. the use of u in lu, hu, tu, etc.

I should say chiangchiu iang is missing but penang and kedah,perak use chuanchiu iong like kiang/kiong.It is the same words like teochiu.
I wonder are really those 6.5 million chuanchiu people in China use SE(shuo in mandarin) for speak.

Andrew: I think you can add 1 more difference, and that is Penang Hokkien doesn't follow the tonal change rules too! Anyway, with regards to the u vowel, do you know whether it is in other sub-dialects too?

iang/iong: 上, 傷, 向. There are many others.

Hong: Both my grandparents were born in Penang and neither were in Khoo kongsi because none of them had the khoo surname.

I listen to RTM teochiu news a lot and find that the sounds are the same with chiangchiu.

Are you saying that your grandfather cannot remember where his ancestors came from?
My grandfather came from Chuanchiu,LamAua in 1930s and my grandmother side came from Chuanchiu Dehua which is the only two group of chuanchiu without association ,another is shishi.
