POJ (PE̍H-ŌE-JĪ ) NAME: -
ANCESTRY: Okinawan Father with Taiwanese Hoklo/Hokkien Mother from Taiwan
COUNTRY: Taiwan & Japanese
CATEGORY: Actor & Singer based in Hong Hong

DESCRIPTIONS & ACHIEVEMENTS:

Takeshi Keneshiro is a Japanese actor and singer of mixed heritage - his father is Okinawan and his mother is Taiwanese (Hokkien/Hoklo)
• He is multilingual, fluent in Mandarin, Taiwanese (Hokkien) and Japanese, and to lesser degrees in English and Cantonese.
• Takeshi Kaneshiro is one of 10 recipients of the Green Planet Film Award (23 March 2010) in the category "10 Best International Actors of the Decade (Asia)"
• Considered by Time Magazine to be the "Asian film industry's Johnny Depp."
• Spokes-model of PRADA
• Spokesmodel for Mitsubishi Galant model (car).

Takeshi Keneshiro 's mother is Taiwanese and his father is from Okinawa, Japan. He was born and raised in Taipei but holds Japanese citizenship as well. The son of a Japanese businessman and a Taiwanese homemaker.

There hasn't been an Asian actor quite as versatile as Takeshi Keneshiro, who is able to straddle the Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japanese and Hollywood film industries because of his proficiency in various languages. Still, one wonders if the reason why he's so sought after is because he is so elusive. No one really knows what he does outside of film commitments, and his reluctance towards being in the spotlight is legendary.

NAME, DESIGNATION: LIN YUTANG
DOB: 10 October 1895 born in the town of Banzai, Pinghe, Zhangzhou, Fujian
DOD: 26 March 1976
CHINESE/PINYIN NAME: 林语堂/ Lín Yǔtáng
POJ (PE̍H-ŌE-JĪ ) NAME: 林語堂,
ANCESTRY: Banzai, Pinghe, Zhangzhou, Fujian
COUNTRY: China
CATEGORY: Chinese writer, translator, linguist and inventor.

DESCRIPTIONS & ACHIEVEMENTS:

• Lin Yutang (10 October 1895 – 26 March 1976) was a Chinese writer, translator, linguist & inventor.
• Lin was born in the town of Banzai, Pinghe, Zhangzhou, Fujian
Lin Yutang first Chinese author to reach the top of "the New York Times bestseller list."
• From 1923 to 1926, Lin Yutang taught English literature at Peking University.

Lin Yutang (October 10, 1895 – March 26, 1976) was a Chinese writer, translator, linguist and inventor. His informal but polished style in both Chinese and English made him one of the most influential writers of his generation, and his compilations and translations of classic Chinese texts into English were bestsellers in the West. He also invented the Mingkwai "Clear and Quick" Chinese-language typewriter that played a pivotal role in the Cold War Machine Translation research (see Tsu, 2010).

Lin Yutang was born in the town of Banzai, Pinghe, Zhangzhou, Fujian. This mountainous region made a deep impression on his consciousness, and thereafter he would constantly consider himself a child of the mountains (in one of his books he commented that his idea of hell was a city apartment). His father was a Christian minister. His journey of faith from Christianity to Taoism and Buddhism, and back to Christianity in his later life was recorded in his book From Pagan to Christian (1959).

Lin studied for his bachelor's degree at Saint John's University in Shanghai, and then received a half-scholarship to continue study for a doctoral degree at Harvard University. He later wrote that in the Widener Library he first found himself and first came alive, but he never saw a Harvard-Yale game. He left Harvard early however, moving to work with the Chinese Labor Corps in France and eventually to Germany, where he completed his requirements for a doctoral degree in Chinese philology at the University of Leipzig.

Lin Yutang, who was schooled on Gulangyu and taught at Xiamen University from 1926-1927, was the first Chinese author to reach the top of the New York Times bestseller list. Pearl S. Buck had to urge the anxious author to publish his 1935 bestseller “My Country and my People,” but Lin went on to do more than any one in his generation to bridge the gulf between East and West.

(Ref: http://www.amoymagic.com/linqiaozhi.htm)

Lin Qiaozhi came from an educated Christian family in the cosmopolitan treaty port city of Gulangyu in Fujian. Never married, she focused her education and career on saving the lives of mothers in childbirth, based at China's premier medical school and hospital -- Peking Union Medical School in Beijing.

Lin became the first woman hired as a resident physician in the PUMC hospital. In 1932, after she had served as a general resident physician for a year, PUMC sent her to Manchester Medical College and London Medical College's Gynecologic and Obstetric Hospital as a visiting scholar, and the following year to Vienna. In 1939, Lin went to Chicago University Medical School to continue her research. (She used the name Lim Kah T'I for research publications.) After she finished her study in 1940, she was granted honorary membership in several U.S. scientific associations, but she turned down offers to remain in the United States.

Upon return to PUMC, Lin Qiaozhi became the first woman in China to be appointed director of a hospital department of obstetrics and gynecology. Other "firsts" for women were to follow in the 1950s, when she was appointed vice-chairwoman of the Chinese Medical Association, director of the new Beijing Maternity Hospital, and a deputy director of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences.

She also was elected a representative to the National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

In the 1970s, Lin served as a consultant to the World Health Organization and vice- chairwoman of the National Women's Federation.

Dr. Lin Qiaozhi is well-known & loved by Chinese people, from China’s Premier Zhou Enlai and his wife down to the poorest commoners, from the 1940s through several years of illness before her death in 1983.

In fact, she was called a "Living Buddha" by a large number of women patients who received her care and treatment, many of whom named their babies for her. While Lin Qiaozhi's devotion to her patients and brilliant medical skills were apparent to all, her lifelong Christian faith was largely unknown to most people, given the political situation of her time.
