Chinese languages

Friends :
I want to know how you learn the chinese language ,because I think the chinese word are so perplexing,every word looks similar .
If I need just learn how to speak it then go to learn how to write it ?
could some one can give me some suggest ,which way is the better way to learn chinese ,go to some school ,or go to some web ,or just learn myself ? I am at a loss now !

For me I try multiple ways like; sentence book (for dummies collection), free website, podcast , pimsleur, youtube and 1-on-1 lesson on skype.
