Re: Huili̍ppin place names, Hoklo- and Mando-based sinicizat

Post by amhoanna »

I was reading about the island of Jolo in the Asia Times today. One folk etymology for "Jolo" goes like this:
There is actually no record how Jolo got its name but a tale that was passed from generation to generation states that Jolo came from the “Ho Lang” which means good people. It was said that Chinese traders who frequent the area were pleased by the natives’ excellent attributes and honesty and called the place Ho Lang, later on the name was shortened to ho-lo which means good place.
http://www.paraisophilippines.com/categ ... nces/jolo/

Ho2-loh8? My Holo-sense says no, but who knows. One Joloano I knew told me that there were lots of Hoklos on Jolo, at least back in the day. They got along great with the Suluks in both love and war——war against the Spanish. So, Sulu is like Aceh, except the Bumi and the Tnglang got together.

Hi amhoanna,

I remember Henning Kloeter asking a question about Ho(k)lo on this Forum a long time ago, and nobody knew the answer. As you're a super-knowledgable person who has joined since, I take the liberty to ask the question again (paraphrased, as I can't find the original question, and perhaps even not completely correctly remembered...).

"Does anybody know why 'Hoklo' is pronounced 'Holo' ? I.e. what happened to the -k?"

While we're at it, what are the TLJ for "Hoklo" / what is its etymology?

Hi, SimL.

There's the 河洛 theory, a.k.a. the "Wrong" Theory. It's the most popular theory on the street in TW. I think this points right to the heart of why the concept of Tâi'oân to̍kli̍p hasn't caught on in Taiwan!

There's the 鶴佬 / 學佬 theory, which is not a theory, but just a way to write the name using kanji.

There's the 福佬 theory, which makes sense. The Hakkas needed to call the Hoklos something, so they called them 福佬, but with an imitation Hoklo 福, i.e. "hok", instead of a Hakka "fuk". Kind of like how in some places west of Macau, Hakkas are called Makkai people or Ngai people. Lîm Kiànhui, who's from Ciangciu, points out that the term only exists in places where there's lots of Hakkas nearby. This is the one theory where the "-k" question crops up, though. I think it kind of undermines the theory. With any other theory, we can ask whether the -k was really ever there. The tones are a question mark too. Any Hakka speakers care to shed light?

Lâu Sênghiân, who's studying at Leiden now, banged out a 号佬 theory on Tâigíbāng a few years ago. I'm going to paste it onto the open web right below, just now. The gist of it is that the Hakkas called the Hoklos "号佬" b/c they were already taking up all the good land.

All I have to add to this mess is the "hoannogenesis" theory. Once upon a time, there was a non-Han group called the Hoklau or something like that. They lived in and around what is today Ciangciu. Later, they sinicized en masse and became the "Hokkiens", with a "Ha̍kláu" splinter group in Háihong-Soàⁿboé.

Exhibit A: If the TWese term "Ho̍hló" and the Soàⁿboé term "Ha̍kláu" are cognate, then there could be a good amount of time-depth, poss. taking us back to when much of Ciangciu was non-Han.

Exhibit B: Groups in the area include the Hakka, the Ha (the 畲; I think they call themselves something along these lines, although they mostly speak Hakka), the Hōló / Ho̍hló, and the Ha̍kláu. Hmm... Yes! Hmong. And Hlai.

* BTW, do a lot of people in M'sia/Sg/Sumatra know the word Ho̍hló? I remember using it one time in Melaka or Api and one Hokkien guy said it sounded familiar.

Ta̍k-ê gâu

    hōo in tshiau 著「貉」、「獠」tsit 兩 ê 夭壽

tsit-ê 題目寫出 1 篇論文--a,taⁿ 看著 A 天兄 kap 允言老師 ê 討論
,tú 好 the̍h 出來 liū,hōo ta̍k-ê bóng 參考。

Hi Amhoanna,

Thanks. I'll let Henning know about your inputs. There's still no hope that I could handle the TLJ article without 12-16 hours of solid work (EVEN a ***HOKKIEN*** TLJ article), so for the moment, I'll have to forgo the valuable information in it, but perhaps Henning will find it interesting reading.

Amhoanna, where is Api? I never heard or knew about Ho̍hló/Hoklo until I found the term in Taiwanese websites. Actually I never knew the term "Minnan"/"Banlam" either, until I learned it in Mandarin. And initially I found it hard to believe that "Min" is "Ban" (and not "Bin") in Hokkien! So far I don't remember of any "-in" in Mandarin link to "-an" in Hokkien, unlike Cantonese.

I too had never heard of either term until well past the age of 30 (i.e. in the 1990's). "Minnan" I learnt about from reading linguistics books (in English, obviously) about Hokkien and Taiwanese, and "hoklo" only from this Forum and one or two references in some books.

Yes, it is indeed unique but ...
I read somewhere that the character 閩 actually originated from the word 蠻 'Man' which was used to describe the natives of Fujian province before the Han Chinese migrated there. So that province was originally inhabited by 'savages'. That explains why it is pronounced as 'Ban/Man' instead of 'Min'.

Api = Kota Kinabalu. The city is formally called 亜庇 in Chinese, but I'm guessing more people call it "KK".

Sorry about the hanji, Sim. Mainly what the guy did was look at this whole thing from a Hakkophone perspective, since he speaks some Hakka as a 4th or 5th language. In Hakka, "ho11 lo52" couldn't possibly have anything to do with 福, but it could have something to do with a Hakka verb "ho" that means to take up space/resources/etc. And lo52 would still be 佬.

Lâu Sênghiân wrote this around 2007, give or take a year. A few yrs earlier than that and it would've been written in pure pe̍h'oējī. The mailing list standard for the longest time was this kind of low-tech pe̍h'oējī that had no tone markers, ou instead of open o, etc. It was kind of "controversial" when members started posting in hanlo (tnglangji + angmoji). Some of the elders thought it was wrong. Then Sênghiân "slammed" them with long posts in pure POJ, and most of them couldn't keep up b/c they were Chinese-educated... Their minds were built to process hanji. At that pt I looked back and was like, oh, so that's why nobody ever responded to my long posts (in POJ).
