Resources for learning Spoken Cantonese?

Post by Jen »

Hey,
I was wondering if anybody could recommend me any books, CD-ROMS, audio cds/tapes, for learning Cantonese. I already speak Cantonese pretty okayish, but my english has overtaken my cantonese, partly because i never usally have the opportunity to speak it (mother speaks cantonese, dad english).
I already have a large collection of books, but none seem to be quite what i need. My cantonese is far beyond beginner, but then not quite advanced either, although it isn't exactly intermediate... am i making sense? What i need a book/cd/program that will increase my vocabulary, show me different ways of constructing sentence that convey the same meaning etc., also it would be good if anyone could recommend anything for learning the grammar and vocabulary of Formal Cantonese???
I hope someone will be able to help
Jenny.

Hi Jenny,
I'm in a similar situation, Mum speaks Cantonese and Dad English. My Dad luckily also speaks Cantonese, so at home we use both languages. I expect in your home only English is spoken right?
I know that there is a book about Cantonese Grammer its very good and gives very clear explainations its called 'CANTONESE ~ A COMPREHENSIVE GRAMMAR. Its published by Routledge and is part of their grammars series.
Best way to improve your vocabulary is to get your Mum to speak to you more in Cantonese, also do you watch any Cantonese TV serials?watching these is the best way of hearing really colloquial conversation.
Hope this is of help. I'm in UK, where are you?

Thanks,
