Does anybody know of places for a beginner to do a crash mandarin course in China (not HK) for between 2-4 weeks ?

I don't think you can learn any language in "2-4 weeks", let alone mandarin.
To save time and your money, buy a pack of learing kit (CD,CAssettes, etc) would be more essential than travelling thousands miles from your country to China and have a "(K)aput (F)acetious (C)ourse"!!!
