Dear Matt, you can translate it in Chinese:

1. Can guang(pronounced tsahn guang)
2. hui guang(pron. huey guang)

Thanks a lot.

Well, There are tens of synonyms of both "shining" and "light" in Chinese. How we should translate them depends on more detailed information.

One of my cousin is named "shining light" and his father chose the characters of "明暉". Be careful, it is very traditional, somewhat archaic.

"shining light " means outstanding, right?

If so, in chinese, "jie shu" or "shu lei ba cui"

Dear aggie,

Your characters are used very commonly in names, nothing archaic about them (except maybe they've already existed for thousands of years) :) But I know lots of people that have these characters in their names.
