where can I find some printable and practical material (eg lists of common verbs, nouns, adjectives, conversational phrases)? So far I have studied some grammar, but I lack basic vocabulary. I think Adam Sheik's Cantonese Helpsheets are great, but unluckily I am studying Putonghua !!!

Carlo,
Books can be a pretty good resource for what you're talking about. Most Chinese learning books have sections in which vocablary is listed, so you could use those to learn vocabulary.

Some people may want to stone me for this, but the Lonely Planet series would probably fit the bill for you. For about $7 you get words & phrases, factoids and a decent 2-way dictionary. Pick up the one on Cantonese while you're at it.

There should be some hand books for international visitors in China. The you can find the sentences and show the Chinese to them, then you will be understood. I know there are some book in Hong Kong airport, because I have one friend from U.K. has one.
