Folks,
You should have a look in a map to find out where Jilin is first, before taking the offer up. It is in the north east of China, bordering Russia.
If you do the arithmetic, that's 25 characters per day for three and a half months, and on top of that, you've got english language teaching duties for half the day. The question is, if you can recognise these characters, does that mean you have a reading proficiency?
My answer is, No. You have to learn the grammar, syntax and vocabulary. Vocabulary is not just single character items, but composed of many many bisyllabic, and polysyllabic words. So these multiple character compounds or words to you and me are what you should be learning.
It is a false economy to say learn 2500 character in 100 days and you'll be fluent. Be warned. If it is so good, then, you won't have any leisure time to yourself. Hahaha!

Chairman Mao had said :without investigation ,without right to say.
Dylan Sung did not know my method , how can he know we do not
learn grammar ,syntax and vocabulary ?Even in China pupil need 5
years to learn 2500 chinese characters generally,but at my kindergarten
the children of 5 or 6 years old can master them easily and happily in
100 days .Meihekou city locate in the middle of jilin province ,500
kilometer away from russia . the chance is coming ,do or not depend
yourself .

You will have much leisure time ,as you only need 90 minutes to study
and 90 minutes to teach .the chinese idiom says well :if you want to
know the flavour of pear ,you shoud taste it by yourself

Folks,
Unlike the children, who have already had a history of being immersed in their own language, a foreign student has the uphill struggle of starting from scratch.
Remember, the child of six would have already obtained a large native Chinese vocabulary, long before they enter school.
In university departments offering Chinese to students, the four year course covers only around 1500 to 1800 characters in all. One of these years is spent within China itself. That means that they roughly teach around 600 characters per year. If you are a foreigner, wanting to take up Chinese, consider the case in universities outside China, and ask yourself, is 2500 characters in 100 days a realistic proposition for you? You would have to be an exceptional learner to acquire that level of recognition of hanzi, but it says nothing about the vocabulary you would have acquired.
Vocabulary, which in modern Chinese language terms, contains many polysyllabic compounds which make up words. For example, library is tu2shu1guan3 composed of three characters 图书馆 in simplified characters, and 圖書館 in traditional characters. Note that there are six character forms here. In China, you'll learn simplified characters. Each character's meaning,
tu2 = a drawing, map
shu1 = book
guan3 = an establishment
Now, ask youself, if you're learning 25 characters per day, for 100 days, and you are expected to learn character compounds also, what time will you have to fully memorise the compounds. John DeFrancis's Chinese Readers published by Yale University Press, is a full course containing around 1200 characters, in three levels. Together, they span a three year course.
Given the breadth of characters you might learn, and I suspect you may have be exceptional to be able to do it, you may not have the depth of vocabulary which would give you any passing fluency.
In Hong Kong, elementary school children are taught 2600 characters when they finish this level of schooling, and it takes six years, so there is good agreement with character counts. However, Chinese school children between 6 and 12 will have had years of native language immersion before and during school. Three months, in my view, is insufficient for gaining any depth in the Chinese language. I am only putting perspective into your claim.

Dyl said a lot,but his conclusion was made up on traditional ,common method of learning chinese .I had said that the children in china also
take 5 years to study 2500 chinese characters if they use traditional ,common method .We must respect fact .the fact is that the
children of 5 or 6 years old in my kindergarten mastered 2500 chinese characters easily and happily in 100 days.they study for 90 minutes everday .they have much leisure time .I did not use any forcing means .
In fact ,the clever children only take 70 days .The foreigner is lower than
the chinese children in pronunciation ,but their analytical ability is higher than the children .In my practice ,I have found that the younger children
are higher in (illegibility) remembrance ,and the older children are higher
in logic remembrance .Of course ,my method utilized a lot of logic rememberance means . The fact is over eloquence . Let us face the fact !

What does the superscript refer to? I see one after nearly every Mandarin word translated into the English pinyin. .. such as "tu2shu1guan3" in one of the above messages. I also see them in various books and articles about the Chinese language, and nothing ever explains what they mean.
