Hokkien and Teochiu

Post by Lim Eng Di »

I just came upon this Hokkien posting site. Something like this for Teochiu (like myself) has not really evolved on the web (there are a few however). That's why I created my own website for Teochiu:

http://teochiu.tripod.com

In anycase, I'm personally interested in going to Taiwan to learn Hoklo, is there a standard variety that would be taught in schools? Or would I have to learn some from that variety and some from another. It seems like Taiwanese is a mix of Quanzhou and Zhangzhou varieties, as well as something unto itself because of its isolation from mainland China. Naturally I prefer the Zhangzhou pronounciations because they are closer to the Teochiu. Very similar in some Teochiu speaking areas of extreme South Fujian province.

To me, Hokkien (all its varieties), sound very pleasant to me. It's like hearing someone speaking a accented and interesting variety of Teochiu.
