two translations..thanks!

Post by kim »

Hi.
I wanted to see if anyone knew what "gei soht" meant? Does it have something to do with memory like "gei sing" or anything? I also wanted to ask how do you say "only" in Chinese...for both contexts of... "It's the ONLY thing she knows" and "She is the ONLY friend she has." Is there any difference between the two? What is the pingyum for it (them) and characters? Thanks. ~ Kim

gei6 suet6 = technology
gei6 suet6 sing3 - technological

Kui5 bat1 gwoh3 ji1 do3 ni1 yeung5 ye5 je1 - she only knows this thing

Kui5 bat1 gwoh3 yat1 goh3 pang4 yau5 je1 - she only has one friend

there are two different types of "only" in cantonese. One is "Bat1 gwoh3" which refers to a specific number or used in the sense of "merely" ( its merely water - bat1 gwo3 hai6 sui2 je1). "zeng6 hai6" is more to say only one thing at the exclusion of others ie ( I only take buses ) - ngoh5 zeng6 hai6 daap3 baa1 si2.

Another more formal way to say only is 'ji2' ie. lei5 ji2 lung4 gau3 se2 sun3 hui3 - all you can do is write a letter.

ji2 yau5 leong5 goh3 yan4 - (there) is only 2 people

I think this is all correct....the only thing I am not sure about is the "ji2' word, cause it is formal many people dont use it much.

Just guess!

gei3 seot6 記述, witing down something according to memory.

only is zi2 只(只是),colloquially, zing6 hai6 淨係, bat1 gwo3 is a kind of shortened expression for zi2 bat1 gwo3 只不過

for 'not only’ we can say m5 zi2 不只, or m5 daan1 zi2 不單只(不單是),where daan1 means only too.

In Mandarin ji-shu means technical and ke-ji means technology. I'm guessing that your gei-suet might be this ji-shu. Don't know if they translate the same from Cantonese though.
