I would like some help with Cantonese slang-please help

Post by mavericker »

Hello. I'm doing research on Cantonese youth, street and college slang for a project I"m working on.

Can someone please tell me,
What are Cantonese slang terms that mean:

tough guy
tough girl
tough woman
girl prone to fighting
guy prone to fighting

Please let me know, and please list as many terms as possible. Thank you. :D

tough guy
tough girl
tough woman
girl prone to fighting
guy prone to fighting
tough = gien keung / nround cheng

we wont say touch guy or tough girl tough woman in Cantonese, but would describe such as, the woman is tough (gien keung); the boy is tough; the girl is tough,etc

the same,

prone to fighting = ho jin

ho = prone / like to do sth
jin = war / fighting

or fight = da

girl = lui
boy = jai

girl prone to fighting = da lui

boy prone to fighting = da jai

BUT 'DA' can be viewed as verb & noun, when it's verb, 'Da' means' to hit', when it's noun, it means' fighting'

so 'da lui' can both be 'girl prone to fighting' or 'to hit a girl',
'da jai' can both be ' boy prone to fighting' or' to hit a boy'.

it depends.

Hello. How would you say "guy" or "woman" In Cantonese slang?

When I said "tough guy" or "tough woman" in Cantonese slang, I didn't a literal translation of these expressions. Do you know of any such terms?

guy = jai

woman = lui yun / fu lui

actually in Chinese/Cantonese, woman means those who is married, therefor, 'fu lui' is married while lui yun can be married or not married.

TOMBOY

As far as I know, there is no such word in Chinese/ Cantonese means 'tomboy' , I guess it might be because Chinese society is quite conservative,

the Chinese word 男人婆 mentioned above should be pronounced as' larm yun por' , which means a girl's outlook or behavior is similar to a boy only, not in love with girls.

hope you can understand with my poor English
and hope this helps ~

ooooh, by the way , since nowadays in Hongkong, we use to speak with Cantonese & English (mix use of them), if we say a girl who's in love with another girl and she looks like a boy , we simple describe her as ' tomboy' but we describe a girl who's in love with another girl but looks still girlish, we just say she's pure.

the Chinese word mentioned above just mean the way she acts or looks, but not sexual orientation.
