written & spoken form

Post by bebe »

i've been listening to song lyrics and understand that some words are only meant to be used in written/singing form?... for example,

huk1 = cry... but when speaking u would say "haam", right?
hon3 = look/see... but you would say "tai2"
man5 = kiss in written form.. (is it sek3 in spoken form?)
si6 = yes/it is.. but speaking would be "hai6"
dik1 = possessive, but spoken would be "ge3"

my question is~ do people in hongkong actually use terms such as "huk", "hon", or "man" etc. in their speach or would it sound weird?

it sounds weird in fact.

in fact most (almost 99%, sorry i didnt actually do the statistics... :p) cantonese songs were of written form lyrics.

u r correct that it REALLY sounds WEIRD if u talk like that.
in hk NEVER say,"他哭了!","我剛剛看見一隻小白兔。"...
plz use,"妘蛦漶I","我正話睇倒隻兔仔。"... instead. :)))

3. yu4 与 -- and
4. ya5 yau5 也有 -- also have
5. ying4 si6 仍是 -- still is
