An interesting Chinese radical

The meaning of the Chinese character “阜” is “mound”. In early times, it was written like “山”. Many Chinese characters related to mountains have the radical “山”or “阜”. When “阜” is a radical, it is generally on the left side. For example, in the characters “阴” (the north side of the mountain) and “阳” (the south side of the mountain), the radical on the left is actually “阜”; it was only after the zhuan style evolved into lishu that “阜” became what it is today, that is, “阝”. Now, this radical is called “左耳刀” (an ear on the left).
