Political Rallies/Speeches in Hokkien

Post by SimL »

Hi,

It's a pity that the various political rallies and speeches in Hokkien are scattered all through this Forum. I found another one on YouTube, and it would have been lovely to be able to add it to the single topic devoted to this.

So, I'll just start a new topic here.

It's in the "Southern Malayan" variety of Hokkien.

I'm going to misuse this topic, because there hasn't been much response here anyway, and I don't want to start a new topic for this.

Do the two guys have a "Hokkien accent" when they are speaking Mandarin? It seems to me that the one in the middle has a particularly distinctive Hokkien way of speaking Mandarin (but my Mandarin sucks, so I'm only very tentatively asking this...)

GE2011 - WP - Chen Show Mao - Political Rally in Full Hokkien Speech

Singapore General Election 2011
Workers Party Rally 05.05.2011
Aljunied GRC - Serangoon Stadium

Mr Chen is not very fluent in Hokkien but he tried hard to speak the full speech in Singapore-accented Hokkien. Look like either he is reading from his script or check the points to talk.
In Taiwan and Malaysia, political rally in full Hokkien speech are very common;
but in Singapore is becoming a bit rare.

Workers Party's Hougang by-election rally 19-5-2012: Png Eng Huat's Hokkien Speech

--- excellent speech to raise the passions of the supporters.
I don’t know if I m right, but I always found the political speech in dialects such as Hokkien or Cantonese in Malaysia and Singapore seems more fervent/passionate than using standard Mandarin. Dialects seems to be able to rouse the minds of the listeners to greater heights.

Hokkien Political Rally at Selangor State, Malaysia: (Hulu Selangor By-Election) Ng Swee Lim

This is the Klang (Pa-sang) Hokkien speech, interspersed with some Mandarin, Malay, English and Teochew.
Very interesting speech, Hard hitting speech with lots of innuendos, proverbs, crude words and criticism.
Hokkien language is still very much alive in Klang Valley, Selangor State.
Mr Ng Swee Lim is from the opposition alliance’s.

Very interesting Political speech in Penang Hokkien dialect by a veteran Indian Politician in Penang.
As usual in Malaysian speech, there are smattering of other languages such as Malay and English words interspersed with main Hokkien speech here.

Hokkien Medicine Seller at night market - Lost In Translation

Very funny if you can understand the jokes....

Really funny.
Only in spoken Cantonese and Hokkien will the jokes sound very funny. ...esp bad and dirty jokes, life jokes and personality and lifestyles jokes. If the same jokes were to use Mandarin language, the main part of the jokes will not be so evident. No wonder no matter how the government try to suppress dialects, Hokkien and Cantonese is still popular language in entertainment industry.
