Chinese languages

I have been looking for audio tapes with cantonese/ english transalations to teach my daughter cantonese. I was born in New Zealand, so my cantonese is not that great but would love to learn and be able to teach my daughter. I have bought a few cds with cantonese nursery rhymes, I understand some but need the english translations in writing as I can only speak basic cantonese. Would like some fresh ideas of how to learn myself and to teach my daughter.

If you want to learn cantonese the best way is to find the yale rominazation of the language and study it. There are many dictonaries and suplies on the internet and at book stores. My recomendation is use the yale rominaztion. I learned Cantonese for two years and have found sucess using it. The most important part is to speak as often as you can.

Maybe LSHK (Linguistic Society of Hong Kong) Transcription (romanization) System is a better choice.

i bought the book "Teach yourself Cantonese" by hugh baker and ho pui kei. its a book with several lessons (two dialogues per lesson) and new vocab. it comes with two CDs that have the dialogues spoken. if you are dedicated, its a good way to teach yourself! or theres the expensive but pretty good pimsleur series.

I'm going to second the recommendation of Pimsleur's courses, since they're still uncontestedly at the top of the pile.

Yes, like everything else ever committed to digital media, they can be obtained illegally. But don't do that. It's illegal. Yes, it's free, but you can't do it because the law says so. So don't.

I believe Yale romanization is better for people with English background. LSHK's jyutping romanization requires one to substitute several letters such as j for a y sound and z for a j sound.

The Yale romanisation was intended for English people. Non-English speaking people, especially Europeans, might consider the (newer) jyutping scheme. This scheme usually fits their native speech better and is (largely) based on the International Phonetic Alphabet.

I think that the best advice is to live for a period of time in the country what language you are learning..no matter what language it is..if you have such opportunity, it'll be good to travell with your daughter in China)) anycase all learners without such practice have accents..Luck

Better Teaching policy will be your live teach like a teacher not any audio recorder.
